How to prevent basement flooding in 2026
Most basement water problems start because certain easy to implement solutions are not in place. Address these early to get the lead on Ottawa’s unpredictable climate. Here are a few things we tell homeowners to address.
1. Redirect downspouts
Downspouts should be redirected to at least 3 meters away from the foundation, ideally into permeable areas. Ottawa City’s Rain Ready Ottawa program can provide rebates to homeowners in priority areas to support the installation of rain barrels onto your property.
2. Sealing cracks and openings
Ensure any cracks in the walls, floors, window wells and the foundation are properly sealed
3. Proper slope of the ground
Check the slope of the ground: it should fall away from the foundation so snow melt and rainwater drain away from the home
4. Cover that egress window
Install a basement egress cover, if relevant, to prevent snow buildup in the hollow that can seep into the window frame
5. Garbage down the drain
Don’t throw garbage, grease or other hazardous waste down your drains, especially if your downspouts are connected into your sewer. This can cause blockages and increase risk of flooding
6. Proper foundation drain direction
Foundation drains should drain into the storm water sewer and not the sanitary sewer
7. Clear some snow away
Snow can be cleared away from the foundation to prevent snowmelt from running seeping into walls
