7 Signs Your Ottawa Basement Needs Waterproofing
Most basement water problems give you warning signs long before the first big flood. Spot them early in Ottawa’s freeze-thaw climate and you can often fix the issue with a simple crack repair instead of a major job. Here are the seven we tell homeowners to watch for.
1. A musty, damp smell
That earthy basement smell is moisture and mildew. Even with no visible water, persistent dampness means humidity is getting in through the foundation, the earliest and most common warning sign.
2. White chalky residue on the walls (efflorescence)
Those white mineral deposits are left behind as water moves through concrete or stone and evaporates. It is proof water is passing through the wall, even if the surface looks dry.
3. Cracks in the foundation
Hairline cracks are common as foundations settle, but any crack that weeps during rain needs sealing. In newer homes this is often a quick crack injection; ignored, water under pressure will widen it.
4. Peeling paint or bubbling on basement walls
When paint or sealer lifts off a basement wall, moisture behind it is pushing through. It is a reliable sign of water migrating in from outside.
5. Damp spots or staining where the floor meets the wall
The “cove joint”, where the floor slab meets the foundation wall, is the most common entry point for a high water table. Staining there usually points to an interior drainage solution.
6. Pooling water after rain or spring melt
Actual water on the floor after a storm or during the spring thaw is your foundation telling you the drainage isn’t keeping up, frequently a failed or missing sump pump or clogged weeping tile.
7. A sump pump that runs constantly or never
A pump that never stops is undersized for your water volume; one that never runs may already be dead. Either way, you’re one storm away from a wet basement.
